A
public high school in Patterson, CA. has begun a first in the nation
truck driver training program at the school. This includes the usual
book work, simulator time, some actual behind-the-wheel time and even
some basic vehicle maintenance procedures. Right now the country is
seriously short of truck drivers. This is a significant contributor to
the backup of good at our west coast ports right now, among other
issues.
I have no idea
how extensive or successful the training program will turn out to be,
but the whole concept is certainly a step in the right direction.

I drove commercial rigs for 6 years. Paid pretty well and, unlike law enforcement and corrections jobs, I was home most nights, weekends, and holidays.
Remember High School shop classes? Anybody? Now if they can just escape California's current wokeness agenda, they just might actually prepare some students for productive careers.
I took wood shop and metal shop in junior high and electronics in high school. Came in very handy a time or two in later life. Plus they were FUN.
I took wood shop in Jr. high. You can't tell it now by the amount of caulk I use on a repair.
