An unnamed U S Army soldier was killed by a bear during a training exercise near Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on Tuesday.
The
673rd Security Forces Squadron responded to the attack. The soldier
was part of a small group training near the Anchorage Regional
Landfill. It is not yet known what species of bear was involved.
Alaska Wildlife Troopers are searching for the animal.
I
know pretty much zero about the physical layout out there but I suspect
that they might be rethinking doing small group training near the
landfill, which I suspect is a bear magnet for much of the year. I
would also like to point out the cops in a lot of Alaska carry .375
H&H rifles just to deal with bears. I suspect an M-4 or M-16 might
not stop a determined bear. However, I have not heard of this happening
before so maybe I just don't know what I am talking about. I am also
reasonably confident the people stationed up there are aware of the
potential problem presented by bears.
The base is supposed to release further information as it becomes available.
