TRIAL BEGINS FOR COP IN "WHOOPS WRONG APARTMENT" HOMICIDE

The trail started yesterday for Amber Guyger, 31, formerly of the Dallas P D, in the shooting death of Botham Jean, 26, a year ago.

The facts are not much in question. Sgt. Guyger entered Jean's apartment in the mistaken belief it was her own. The hallways and entrances are very similar and are said to cause confusion to residents. When she entered what she thought was her apartment she saw Jean eating a dish of vanilla ice cream and shot him to death. Her lawyers are arguing self-defense based on an honest but mistaken belief she was in her own apartment. She was also apparently mentally distracted by some emails from a colleague who she was playing hide-the-salami with and who she was apparently hoping to engage in some horizontal recreation with that evening. Unfortunately some of the text messages were deleted between the time of the occurrence and the time the phone made it into evidence.

Nobody seems to believe that Sgt. Guyger acted maliciously in the matter but rather that she was too quick on the trigger and not paying enough attention to what was going on around her. Much of the problem of course is that Guyger is White and Jean is Black.
