A young girl raped inside a prison for four days. That could only happen with the connivance of prison officials. The best that can be said for this troubling case is that 20 prison staff, including the director, have been fired.

A girl of 14 has told police she was drugged, beaten and raped for four days by inmates after being lured inside a men's prison in northern Brazil.
She managed to escape and found help from a jail guard, who took her to the police, officials have said.
Two other teenagers were brought into the jail which is 26 miles from the Para state capital, Belem.
The prison director and 19 other staff have now been fired and a full investigation launched.
A new wall is to be built around the prison to increase security. Currently it works on a semi-open basis, with inmates free to leave during the day.
There is no fence, and the back of the building is surrounded by jungle.
Para's head of police Fabiano Amazonas said the girl was taken to the prison by someone who wanted to charge inmates for sex.
‘She said she was abused by several inmates inside the prison, but managed to escape,' he said.
After escaping the girl was also taken to a hospital so she could be examined for evidence and housed in a shelter, Amazonas added.
‘The facts show a violation of human dignity, a disrespect of the basic rights of this child, a serious violation of human rights,’ said prosecutor for civil rights, Alan Mansur Silva.
It is not the first case of a girl allegedly being abused inside a men's prison in Para state.
In 2007, a teenage girl was locked up in a jail cell with 21 men for nearly a month in Abaetetuba. She was forced to have sex in exchange for food.
