When NBC edited the recording of Zimmerman’s 911 call in order to make it sound like he was a racist, it intentionally demonized the shooter of Trayvon Martin
Greg ‘Gadfly’ Doyle disagreed with my prediction that Zimmerman would not prevail in the lawsuit he filed against NBC. He also feels that if Zimmerman prevails, the case could end up placing legal restrictions on the media at large. Here is how Greg responded to my post on PACOVILLA Corrections blog:
I suspect Mr. Zimmerman will prevail in his lawsuit eventually and that NBC will settle the matter out of court, regardless of his criminal court case outcome. Had it not been for NBC fabricating the angle of racism, in order to make the story fit their particular narrative of a White man killing an innocent Black teen, there might not have been such public outcry and vilification of the defendant in this case. As I recall, it was another news media outlet that discovered the editing job, in review of the released 9-1-1 tape, and outed NBC. There is little doubt that the intentional editing contributed to death threats being received by the Zimmerman family, making the defendant a pariah in the public eye.
The bigger problem for NBC (and the media at large) is judicial activism---the probability that a court ruling could become case law which could negatively effect the press, much like other rulings have affected religious freedom by court fiat, and open the door to more lawsuits. And trial lawyers live for lawsuits.
