COP KILLER’S LAWYER WITHDRAWS AS OBAMA’S CIVIL RIGHTS NOMINEE

NAACP attorney Debo Adegbile succeeded in having the death sentence of cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal commuted

On December 9, 1981, Mumia Abu-Jamal walked up to Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner, who had just stopped his brother on a traffic violation, and shot the officer to death in cold blood. The former Black Panther was tried, convicted and sentenced to death in 1982. After a series of appeals, his sentence was commuted to life without parole in 2011. The leading lawyer in his appeals was NAACP attorney Debo Adegbile.

Abu-Jamal became a folk hero to people all over the world who believed he was the innocent victim of a racist society and a racist criminal justice system. The U.S. was flooded with petitions from European countries as well as from inside the U.S. demanding his release, not just from death row, but from prison.

Last year President Obama rewarded Adegbile for defending Abu-Jamal by nominating him to be the government's chief civil rights attorney. A bipartisan group of Senators has blocked his nomination because of his work in behalf of Abu-Jamal. On Monday, Debo Adegbile gave up and withdrew his nomination.

Good riddance! Adios mother. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Sometimes truth and justice does win out. Not that often any more, but sometimes.
