WILMINGTON, LOS ANGELES -- A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was wounded after he accidentally shot himself in the leg during a pursuit in Wilmington.
The pursuit started as a car chase involving a green Honda Civic, which came to a stop near Pacific Coast Highway and Alameda Street around 4 a.m. The Civic was believed to be stolen, but authorities have yet to confirm this.
The two suspects in the car bailed on foot and tried to run away. It appears the deputy accidentally shot himself in the calf while chasing the suspects on foot. He is expected to be OK, sheriff's officials said.
One of the suspects, a female passenger who was in the Civic, was taken into custody. The male driver got away.
The outstanding suspect was said to be wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. He was last seen near Alameda Street and Henry Ford Avenue.
The Los Angeles Police Department was assisting the sheriff's department in the search.

It is common to carry your side arm when chasing a suspect on foot. This can result in an unintended discharge. Adrenaline along with running on uneven terrain can be hazardous.
