Yesterday a federal judge dropped a $3 million fine, the largest allowed under the law, on PG&E. This relates to criminal violations of safety regulations which resulted in a gas pipeline explosion in a residential area in San Bruno, CA seven years back. In addition it is extremely likely that PG&E will now have to deal with a safety monitor to ensure that they no longer falsify pipeline safety reports and kill people.
The pipeline blast killed eight, injured more than 50 and destroyed 38 homes. The blast was caused by a bud weld in the pipe. In addition the jury found that PG&E attempted to interfere with the investigation.
