I WONDER IF THEY HAVE INSURANCE?

by Bob Walsh

The Dept. of Water Resources is saying that it may cost as much as $100 million to rebuild the disintegrating spillway from California's Lake Oroville. Even with the normal spillway and the power plant running full blast the water in the lake topped the lip of the emergency spillway today and started going over.

Fortunately they had enough warning that, for the last few days, crews have been working feverishly to remove the trees, brush and other debris that could end up clogging the river downstream if it is washed down from the emergency spillway.

FURTHER: On Saturday the lake topped 901 feet and began going over the emergency spillway, for the first time since the dam was completed not quite 50 years ago. DWR officials insist the dam is in no danger and there is no significant danger downstream. They are now contemplating building a whole new spillway rather than fix the old one but this isn't going to be fixed in a few days, or even a few weeks. Life is hard.
