Nine people from the Sudan (possibly the biggest shithole in north Africa, they still practice quasi-legal slavery there) were stopped by an ICE agent near Champlain, N. Y. The agent questioned the people (including four children) who were passengers in a taxi approaching Canada. At some point eight of them fled the taxi and scampered thru a gully delineating the border at that point, throwing luggage ahead of them as they went. ICE detained the ninth man due to problems with his papers. At some point the ninth man snatched his passport from the border agent and ran for the border.
The RCMP took custody of the nine. Had they tried to enter normally they would have likely been turned around and at least one of them would have been arrested by ICE as an illegal. Under Canadian law once they get across the border they can make a claim of asylum with a high degree of likelihood it will be accepted.
For my money the Canadians can keep them. After a couple of Canadian winters and putting up with French Canadians the Sudan might start looking real good to them again. Or not. Its not like I care.
