COURT LETS SOME AIR OUT OF BORIS' TIRES

by Bob Walsh

A Scottish court has ruled that PM Boris Johnson's action in suspending parliament was illegal in that it was an attempt to avoid scrutiny by parliament.

A panel of three judges of the Court of Sessions in Edinburgh asserted that "the only inference that could be drawn was that the UK government and the prime minister wished to restrict parliament." Boris has announced he will appeal.

I admit my knowledge of the law on that side of the pond is shaky. I was unaware that the court had any jurisdiction in the matter. The PM wants to suspend parliament. The Queen gave permission. End of story (I thought).

The Scottish judges acknowledged that the matter will have to be decided by their Supreme Court (I didn't even know they had one of those). That hearing is due to begin on Tuesday. It could be amusing to follow this. The economic fallout will be world wide if Britain does a no-deal Brexit. Of course the same could be said if they have a deal and leave peacefully and with a modest amount of forethought (which has not been used up until now).
