ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

by Bob Walsh

In 1778 Captain Cook "discovered" the Hawaiian islands, and named them the Sandwich Islands, after the First Lord of the Admiralty. Actually they had been discovered a long time before, by the people who lived there.

In 1902, the Isthmus Canal Commission shifted its focus on a site for the canal from Nicaragua to Panama. (Roughly 50 years ago the U. S. seriously considered using atomic explosives to blast a sea level canal at the Nicaragua site. Eventually somebody decided that would be not such a great idea.)
