COUNT CLEAR, MINUS TWO

by Bob Walsh

Two inmates were terminally rehabilitated in separate but apparently connected incident at the California State Prison, Solano (New Vacaville) on Tuesday.

At about 3:20 p.m. Pedro Garcia and Greg Medrano attacked and murdered Mizrain Nava Cano, 26, on the general population yard. At almost the same time Gabriel Mora and Richard Raya attacked and murdered Jorge Cruz-Banuelos, 30, on the same yard. Three inmate manufactured stabbing weapons were recovered at the scenes.

Cano was a guest of the state out of Sonoma county for voluntary manslaughter and gang activity. He was doing a 13-year stretch. Cruz-Banuelos was about 7 years into a 17-year stretch for ADW with GBI, gang activity and other assorted nastiness. He was also out of Sonoma county.

Just off the top of my head I would guess this is the result of internal gang housekeeping. That is the cause of a LOT of prison violence. Prisons will continue to be unpleasant places until we start incarcerating a better class of people.
