FAITHLESS ELECTOR CASES TO GO TO SCOTUS

by Bob Walsh

SCOTUS has agreed to hear two cases in which states are attempting to penalize members of the Electoral College who refuse to vote for the candidate that they pledged to support.

These electors are selected by each party under the laws of the state in which they are elected. According to some organization called FairVote, which is allegedly a nonpartisan voting rights organization, over the last 224 years a total of 150 electors have NOT voted for the candidate they were pledged to vote for. States have tried to prevent this from happening by writing laws to remove or otherwise penalize these so-called "faithless electors."

Colorado and Washington are two such states. SCOTUS has agreed to hear these cases and will with a bit of luck settle the matter before the 2020 election.
