FITCHBURG, WISCONSIN: An 11-year-old girl has lost her life tragically after being fatally shot in an incident that involved her teenage brother. The incident, which the family claimed was an accident, reportedly happened on Tuesday night, September 28, following which Fitchburg Police officers and emergency medical personnel were called to an apartment in the 5100 block of Curry Court for “a report of a person who had been shot,” a press release stated.

Soon after that, the victim, identified as Carolanah Schenk by her family, was rushed to a hospital, where she was declared dead. Her brother, who is alleged to have been involved in the shooting, was detained and sent to the Dane County Jail, where he was charged on a tentative charge of 1st Degree Reckless Homicide. But no more information has been released.

The press release noted, “The Fitchburg Police Department recognizes the community’s desire to learn more about this tragic incident. Because of the open status of this case and future proceedings in the juvenile justice system, we currently cannot confirm some information or share additional details. Resources remain committed to completing the investigation to the fullest extent possible. As the investigation continues, additional pieces of information could be made available for public release.”

Carolanah was reported to be a sixth-grade student at Forest Edge Elementary School in Oregon. A GoFundMe page launched to help her family included a statement from them that read, “Our 11 year daughter passed away last night and our family is mourning the loss of our beautiful little girl. Our daughter was only in the 6th grade and was a student at Forest Edge Elementary School. Our daughter loved playing video games with her brothers and father. She loved arts and crafts, loved dogs and enjoyed posting funny pictures and videos of herself and others on Tik Tok and Instagram. Our daughter meant the world to us and this has devastated our family.”

It added: “We are asking the community to help put our baby to rest and we need your assistance during this difficult time. We have asked Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County to set up a GoFundMe page to help our family with funeral expenses, counseling services as her siblings and our family will need all the support we can. Please pray for us as we deal with the tragic loss of our daughter. BGC will contribute 100% of your funds to the family and will cover the cost of the GoFundMe expenses.”

Besides, television station WMTV also released a statement from the girl’s family in which they said, “We want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your calls and support over the last 48 hours. Our attention is now being focused on coordinating our daughter’s funeral while at the same time praying that our son is represented and supported. This has been an horrific few days for our family and our goal is to get our son the legal support he needs as this accident has taken an emotional toll on all of us. If you can respect our privacy over the next few days, we need time to grieve and digest all that has occurred. God bless and thank you all for understanding."

A 15-year old should KNOW a gun is not a toy.

As kids we all knew where a pistol was kept in our home. We had also been taught gun safety and that the pistol was there for our protection. We wouldn't have even considered handling the pistol but we knew where it was if it was ever needed.

My father taught us many things and the reasons why we should know them. He also showed us the confidence he placed in us.
