SOME DAYS YOU DO REMEMBER

by Bob Walsh

October 4, 1957.  I would have been in the second grade I think at Andrew Jackson School in San Leandro.  That is the day the the Russkies put Sputnik 1 into orbit, scaring the bejeesus out of all honest, god-fearing Americans and bringing a new dimension to the cold war.  I actually remember it somewhat.  I remember everybody seemed to be surprised because the Russians were all supposed to be a bunch of semi-literate peasants.  Sometimes the opposition can fool you.
