AOC, homeless sleeping in subway train, and former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, popularly known as AOC, has attracted people’s wrath after demanding the defunding of cops so that shelters for homeless people can be made. The call from the 32-year-old activist came after ex-NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton shared a photo of homeless people sleeping inside a subway train. Bratton captioned the picture as “You know why NY’s ‘recovery’ isn’t happening?”

Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bill Bratton got into a Twitter war of words over the NYPD’s role in helping the homeless, in response to a viral tweet from the former police commissioner showing people sleeping aboard a subway train.Former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton is right to point out that New Yorkers and tourists should not be witnessing hundreds of homeless people on the subway

“This photo today on the E Train at 6:45am at 42nd & 8th says it all. Why should working people & tourists be subjected to this? How’s it fair to those who need services? Imagine the cops’ frustration with no support to deal with it!” he added. In no time, the Democratic Socialist Representative of New York joined him and responded by saying: “Of course they’re frustrated. It’s not policing’s job or purpose to address housing, provide healthcare or counseling, or solve the reasons people sleep on the subway. Maybe if we shifted some of that $11B/year spent on robo dogs to housing services we could get somewhere.”

AOC did not stop there and went on to share a series of tweets that read, “Also, ‘why should working people be subjected to this?’ — 1. Homeless people often ARE working people, veterans, and/or disabled 2. Why should THESE folks be subjected to unnecessary homelessness in one of the richest cities in the world where 1000s of apartments are vacant?”

She added: “It’s truly frustrating that Dems & GOP alike water this down into some non-evidence based electoral boogey monster. Nobody wants to live with these conditions, yet nobody wants to challenge the systems and decisions creating them. Don’t complain if you want more of the same $. I truly will never adjust to how normal it is in our country to completely dehumanize people once they fall below a certain income. This is a fmr police commissioner talking about ppl like furniture or animals when his job ostensibly was to protect them too. Telling on himself.”

But Twitter did not seem to agree with AOC as a critic wrote, “Why should budget be taken away from something else? Doesn’t housing get its own budget for this very purpose? Where is the accountability? Come up with better spending plans from allocated budgets and solutions rather than simply tweeting about problems all the time!” Another critic tweeted, “Stealing other peoples money through taxes to fund progressive policies isn’t compassion. It’s extortion. Real compassion would be to voluntarily pool your money together in the free market and build affordable co-op housing, co-op healthcare, co-op education, co-op businesses.”

A person said, “Giving free everything, do not fix the problem, thst makes ppl more comfortable ans lazy; there are a lot of young ones that they can work, stop the pampering, LA has a lot youngsters that they rather beg for $ than work.” The second one slammed, “I do have a hard time understanding the theory that if you give a house to a homeless person then they’ll turn their life around. Like mostly what it’ll do is annoy the people who are actual voters and who are working their asses off to keep from becoming homeless. I’ve seen it!” “Yes let’s make sure no one has any reason to ever work.  The food, energy, and homes will just magically appear.  Problems solved,” the third user added.

Why don't we defund the DNC to pay for homeless shelters? That makes at least as much sense and maybe more.
