Scot Peterson reacts to the verdict in the courtroom on June 29, 2023, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Broward County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Peterson was the
on-duty school resource officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School
in Broward County, FLA back in 2018. He was sacked after failing to
respond to the situation and was charged with 11 counts, including one
count of perjury. Today a jury found him not guilty on all counts.
Peterson,
who is now 60, could have gotten 96 years in the slammer and lost his
pension if he had been found guilty. As far as is known he is the first
law enforcement officer in this country to be criminally charged for
failure to act in this fashion.
The shooter, a former student at the school, was captured alive and is doing life without.
Peterson
was forced into retirement after 33 years on the job as a result of his
inactions during the incident. Peterson has maintained that he thought
the shots were being fired by a sniper outside the building rather than
an active shooter inside the building.

All it takes is one juror.
