Three days ago, in a highly
questionable shooting, a French cop shot and killed a 17-year old boy.
The response was a wave of riots, burnings, looting and general bad
behavior you would expect in L A after a basketball game.
Last
night at least 875 people were arrested in these riots. Most of them
were young to very young. The young man whose death triggered this
situation is identified officially only as Nahel, who is presumably an
ethnic arab.
Curfews were
imposed in many cities and a shitload of cops were called out,
including GIGN antiterrorist units. A ban on public gatherings was
imposed in many areas of France, not just around Paris.
The police officer who shot him has been detained on a preliminary charge of manslaughter.
The kid's funeral will be tomorrow. I expecct it will be "interesting" and not in a good way.
