Affirmative Action at work: Admitted to the University of California in place of a white applicant
SCOTUS
dealt the notion of affirmative action college admissions a serious
blow this morning, at least theoretically. SCOTUS said that colleges
and universities could no longer use the race-focused admission policies
that many had been using for 40 years. Race can still be considered as
part of an individual experience, which could be related in an essay or
personal interview as a consideration for admission. The prospective
student could not however get admission preference solely by being a
member of a specific demographic group.
In
CA this means that the universities must go back to what California
voters passed in the form of Proposition 209 way back in 1996. However
private universities (such as Stanford and CalTech) were exempt from
Prop 209. They will not be exempt from this ruling. There have been
several attempts to rescind Prop 209 in California, most recently in
2020. There have also been several legislative attempts to do so. None
have been successful. The general population of CA is much more
conservative than the government is, but the people also keep electing
seriously liberal assemblymen and senators. It is strange.
The
Harris-Biden administration lobbied the court heavily to not take this
case up. I am sure Senile Joe will say something about this in the next
few days, though what he will actually call it is sort of hard to
guess.
