The city of Vallejo did in fact
declare a state of emergency within the city with regard to available
police resources. This will enable the department to, among other
things, force 12 hour shifts on to staff without a meet and confer. It
would also probably allow the chief to recruit recent retirees back into
the ranks temporarily, assuming they are insane enough to do so.
Right
now the department has a total of 75 sworn officers including 34 patrol
officers. There are 51 vacancies in the sworn officer ranks right
now. Right now 15 officers are out on some sort of medical leave. Ten
of those are unlikely to return. I am unsure where those are counted in
the above figures.
No
matter how you look at it, things are rough there. They are sort-of
considering disbanding the department and turning police operations over
to the Sheriff. I don't expect that will happen, but it might.
