As most people know the police services in Great Britain
are generally not armed. With things being what they are in the real
world about 10% of the police in metropolitan London have the training
and authorization to carry weapons and armed police officers do routine
patrols (as opposed to critical incident responses) these days.
The
problem for them is that a decision was made to charge one of those
officers with murder in the death of Chris Kaba, 24, one year ago. The
officer, whose name has not been released, was granted conditional
release and will likely face trial next year.
In
response to this decision a significant number of Met Officers have
backed away from their status as armed officers. More than 100 of the
300 armed officers have turned in their firearms permits. Officers from
neighboring areas were called in on Saturday night to assist if
necessary and the military was prepped to respond if necessary. (It
wasn't.)
Home Secretary
Suella Braverman has said that she will review the situation to ensure
that armed officers have the confidence they need to do their job.
In the entirety of Wales and England for all of last year police only fired on suspects four times.
In
2021 a police officer was successfully prosecuted for on-duty murder
for shooting a former professional soccer player with a "stun gun" and
then kicking him in the head when he was down. He got eight years.
A
recent independent review of the London Metropolitan Police concluded
that the general public had lost confidence in the coppers due to
deep-seated racism, rampant homophobia and general misogyny.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Deep-seated racism, rampant homophobia and general misogyny -- Just like American cops.
