The crime-ridden and gang-infested metropolis of Stockton
has had about six murders in the last seven days. Most of them have
been inside of residences (as opposed to on the streets) and most of
them have been targeted according to the cops. That usually means drug
gang activity. Not always, but usually. When you add in the usual
street murders due to one thing or another Stockton is moving back up on
the violence list.
In
addition, Stockton's relatively new (5 month) E-Bike program is pulling
way back. It seems that theft and vandalism have taken their toll on
the rolling stock according to Bike Stockton, the non-profit that was
hoping the program would fly. The original plan had the bikes at five
different hubs in the greater Stockton area, a total of 105 bikes.
There are now fewer than ten, all of them on the UOP campus.
The
program represents an unknown, or at least unacknowledged, chunk of a
$7.4 million, from a grant. The grantor, the San Joaquin County Council
of Governments, declined to be interviewed on the matter.
