I was reading my paper this
morning (yes, I am a dinosaur, I still get a daily morning paper, when
it actually shows up) and saw this Op/Ed piece entitled DON'T LET
CALIFORNIA GET YOUR GOAT. It is, in theory, a story relayed by a now
deceased goat named Cedar to Joe Matthews, who writes for an outfit
called Zocalo Public Square.
It
tells the tale of Cedar, who was a 4H project who was sold by a 9-year
old girl at the Shasta County Fair who then decided she didn't want her
goat turned into shishkabob. The goat had been sold to Senator Brian
Dahle, who got creamed by Gavin Newsom in 2022 and the writer absolutely
had to let you know that because Dahle is a Republican. Dahle was
happy to cancel the sale but the county fair people were not, as a life
lesson to the young lady. The girl's mother kidnapped the goat and took
it to someplace that promised to care for it and not turn it into
dinner.
The county fair
people made a complaint and the local county Sheriff sent two people 200
miles to retrieve the goat even though the $902 value is strictly
misdemeanor territory in CA these days. The fair insisted it was grand
theft. The goat ended up being slaughtered and the state is suing the
girl's mother to recover costs involved.
CA is strange.

The rules were to raise the goat. Sell the goat. Slaughter the goat for food. I like Cabrito and would have given her the going price in Texas of $35 - $50 for the goat.
