The feds have just affirmed the requirement that there be at least two live humans on board most freight trains operated in this country. The matter has been under study for about two years.
The railroad operators would love to save the money by losing the conductor. There are, however, several instances of late when having the second person on board to immediately help out if something goes sideways was really, really important. The unions of course like it from a membership standpoint (more members mean more income) but also apparently from a legit safety standpoint.
Plus that way one person can watch the track and the instruments while the other one plays Candy Crush on his cell phone.
