GALVESTON -- The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston on Saturday will host active shooter drills that will require a heavy first responder presence on campus.

The Medical Branch Police Department will present two active shooter scenarios and drills during Disaster Day by Port of Galveston and Galveston police departments, Galveston Fire Department and emergency medical service and medical branch students and faculty.

Disaster Day is a student-led event to educate healthcare professional students on how to act as first responders during a crisis, officials said.

The Medical Branch’s Interprofessional Scholars Program, which trains students seeking health professional jobs, has hosted the event since 2017, according to its website.

The event on Saturday will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Health Education Center, 301 11th St. and the School of Health Professionals and Nursing, 1114 Mechanic St.

Participants and passersby should expect heavy first responder presence at both locations, officials said.

BGB, I thought you would like to know that David Ferrero a former TABC Capt. is now the Chief of Police for all UTMB campuses statewide. TABC hired him from League City PD in 1983. He was later put in charge of training. He later served as a Capt. in the Austin District where he abruptly retired after a disagreement with the Agency Administrator. UTMB hired him immediately. I believe you taught him at COM. I would guess he oversees at least 20 police departments statewide. (USA)
