On January 20, 1981, during his First Inaugural Address, Ronald Reagan referred to WWI hero Pvt. Martin A. Treptow, who died in July 1918 while fighting the Germans as a soldier with the Rainbow Division (42nd Division).
A diary was found on Pvt. Treptow’s body. By his own hand, Treptow had written the following pledge on the diary’s flyleaf:
"America must win this war. Therefore, I will work, I will save, I will sacrifice, I will endure, I will fight cheerfully and do my utmost, as if the issue of the whole struggle depended on me alone."
Now those are the words of a true hero and American patriot.
The word hero has been thrown around so much that some high school football player who scores the game winning touchdown is referred to as a hero. What a crock! Pvt. Treptow and all the soldiers who have died or been wounded while fighting for our country are heroes, not some fucking jocks.
