THROUGHOUT THE WORLD SOCCER FANS TAKE THEIR GAME WAY TOO SERIOUSLY

Referee stabs player, is quartered and beheaded by angry Brazilian fans

As an ice hockey fan, all I will say is give me American football over soccer any day. I know there have been quite a few bad calls made by American football referees that have cost a team the game, but I cannot fathom outraged fans beheading that official and displaying his head on a stake in the middle of the playing field.

MARANHAO, Brazil — Crazed fans beheaded a football referee — then placed his head on a stake in the middle of the pitch.

Trouble flared at the game in Maranhao, Brazil, when referee Otavio Jordao da Silva, 20, stabbed a player who shoved him when a decision went against him.

A mob invaded the pitch and the ref was tied up, beaten, stoned and cut into quarters. His head was then impaled on a stake.

The player Josenir dos Santos Abreu, 30, died from his injuries in hospital.

Police are reviewing mobile phone footage. A 27-year-old man admitted assaulting the referee but denied being responsible for his murder.
