18TH BIRTHDAY PARTY TEXAS-STYLE (UPDATE)

Now that the gun smoke has cleared and the dust has settled, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office has offered a far different version from that of Sheriff Adrian Garcia about what took place at the Saturday night Cypress house party in which two high schoolers were shot dead and 16 others wounded. Garcia had said that someone fired a celebratory shot in the air that was followed by some return gunfire.

According to the Houston Chronicle, “Authorities now say they believe there were multiple shooters, multiple guns, and multiple gangs involved the Cypress area house party" that was attended by more than 100 partygoers, most of them in their late teens.

Willie John-Peters Young, 21, who had been arrested Monday and charged with deadly conduct, was released on Tuesday after numerous witnesses had come forward to say that he did not fire a gun during the party. Randy Stewart, 18, the other suspect taken into custody, remains jailed on an aggravated assault charge for shooting one of the partygoers in the arm. He is not believed to have killed one of the victims because they were both suspects in a check forgery case.

Sheriff Garcia blamed the initial version of events and Young's subsequent arrest on the chaos and confusion that continued to go on during the investigation by his deputies at the scene. Harris County Assistant District Attorney Katherine McDaniel said the authorities are looking for at least two other gunmen.
