A federal judge has just ordered an independent investigation into allegations that California DOC officials deliberately misled the federal court into believing that mentally ill prisoners were receiving much better care than they actually were.
The whistleblower in the matter was Dr. Michael Golding, the chief shrink for the system. Dr. Golding asserts that the department represented that virtually all state prisoners were seen and evaluated by a shrink in the time frame set by the court when in fact the number was less than half.
Prison officials are sniveling, claiming that the investigation can be adequately done by the existing court monitors, who the department is already paying for.
Assuming Dr. Golding is telling the court the truth, the department and some of it's higher ups could be in serious trouble over this. The court does not appreciate being lied to and has many creative ways of expressing displeasure should it chose to do so.

States have been shoving their mentally ill folks in prisons forever. Everyone knows it and when they see what it will cost to house mentally ill by themselves, this will lawsuit will probably fade away. Once you go from correctional to medical the costs skyrocket.
It is not illegal to be crazy. So some how that means jails and prisons are the new mental health treatment facilities.
