STOCKTON GETS A WELL-DESERVED ATTABOY

by Bob Walsh

San Joaquin Delta College is the local community college here in Stockton. It recently got recognition from WalletHub, a personal finance website, as the best among such facilities in California when it comes to cost and quality. It ranked very respectably in the national averages as well. That rankings consider such things as tuition, staff to student ratio, and successful graduation rates.

The school has some very interesting programs including a unique Electron Microscopy program that draws students from around the world. There is a major vocational program linked to the local large Caterpillar dealership and some very respectable nursing programs, a couple of which feed graduates into employment with the state prison system.

I have taken classes here off and on for 30 years and was on the bond committee for a couple of years. It is difficult for a school of this sort to find a successful path between vocational training and academics. Delta seems to be walking that path fairly effectively.

A lot of people don't realize how important a good community college is for the area. Lots of people who otherwise would not have been able to obtain a higher education benefit.

The Cal State Stanislaus extension campus in Stockton is being expanded, and the city and county are lobbying heavily to get an independent Cal State College for Stockton. We deserve it, but it isn't cheap and the wheels turn slowly.
