In 1915 the Germans executed Edith Cavell, an English nurse working in Belgium, for helping allied prisoners escape.

In 1933 Alcatraz was turned over to the Bureau of Prisons for operation as a federal prison.

In 1960 Inejirio Asanuma, the head of the Socialist Party in Japan, was assassinated on live television.
