Mikal Mahdi is a guest of the
people of South Carolina, at least for another couple of weeks. He is
supposed to be scragged by order of the state on April 11 for the 2004
murder of a police officer.
Mahdi
has elected to die by firing squad. He has stated that he believes the
electric chair offers "burning and mutilation" and the needle
"lingering death." He is probably right on both counts.
Mahdi's
legal team is still trying to get him off, on the basis of inadequate
counsel. They are not asserting he didn't do it. His trial lasted only
30 minutes. His defense called no witnesses. They are arguing that
Mahdi was held for many long months in juvie as a youngster and that
somehow warped him beyond understanding. Mahdi in fact plead guilty to
the murder. Which probably explains why his trial only lasted 30
minutes.
My sympathy is limited.

Dead is dead. As long as the state isn't using a knife to kill you, it will usually happen fairly quickly.
