Marcella Sanders was a homicide detective with the New Bedford, MASS, P.D.  She joined the department in 2004.  In 2021 she filed a lawsuit claiming gender discrimination and retaliation.  The disrcimination part of the beef went away but she was successful in her retaliation complaint to the tune of $127,000.  The claim was against the city and Deputy Chief Scott Carola.

Specifically she said that, in 2018 and 2019, created a hostile work environment for her due to her lack of "personal interaction" off duty with the Deputy Chief.  She was awarded $50,000 for emotional distress and $77,000 in lost wages.

She is currently employed as a School Resources Officer in Swansea, but wants to return to her detective gig in New Bedford.  She is seeking a return to work order under the state anti-discrimination laws.

The city is exploring it's options.  The judge has yet to issue a final ruling and could modify the jury award.
