More information is coming out on the CA budget proposal.  The legislature wants between $250 million and $400 million, depending on which particular group of legislators you ask.  Newsom is offering a paltry $110 million in one-time funding.  He suggests that since the cities and counties were such big fans they should fund it themselves.  Newsom HATES the fact that Prop 36 passed by 2-1 back in November.  He hates it because it might actually put criminals in prison and he hates putting criminals in prison.  In all fairness he hates putting ANYBODY in prison, but since prisons exist mostly to put criminals in them, it i kind of a useless distinction.

It remains to be seen what will still exist in public safety funding once Newsom is done hacking away with the line item veto.  He has until 07-01 to finish his butchery.

For some unknown reason Newsom seems to think that refusal to put criminals in mandatory drug treatment or prison will make him MORE appealing to swing voters in the 2026 presidential election.
