Not to put too fine a point on
it, the Christians STOLE Christmas from us Pagans. We call it Yule but
it is the same holiday. It celebrates the change of the season, the
light overtaking the darkness. It has been recognized since time
immemorial.
The early
movers and shakers in the new Christian religion were not stupid men.
They knew they would not endear themselves to the peasants by ripping
off their holidays, so the Winter Solstice became the birthday of Yeshua
Bar Yosef, AKA Jesus Christ.
During
the 4th century the church actually made some attempt to determine the
"real" birthday of the historical person who came to be known as Jesus.
They were unsuccessful. So they went with the symbolism of the
Solstice. Nor were they the first. A great many Pagan saviors, such as
Osiris and Hercules, were born on or around the Solstice. Their
parentage was fuzzy. Their physical place of birth was humble. They
lived a life of toil and behalf of mankind and made a literal or
figurative trip to the underworld.
We
Pagans are very open-minded on religious matters. The fact that you do
not worship the way we do does not bother us. We don't even mind that
you appropriate more than a couple of our holidays. It would be nice
though if you gave us a little credit for them now and again.
In
any event the Solstice takes place this year at 7:03 a.m. Pacific Coast
time on Sunday, December 21. You should go out and sacrifice a goat on
behalf of the sun god. That will also give you some shish kebab for
Yule dinner. One can be practical about such things.
Happy Yule to one and all. Even Christians. Blessed be. Ho Ho Ho.
