Natalee Holloway's killer Joran van der Sloot has attempted to take his own life inside a maximum-security prison in Peru.
The 38-year-old convicted killer was found inside his cell on the brink of death on Friday, December 12.
According to Radar Online, prison guards were serving inmates breakfast at the time of the commotion, and intervened to save van der Sloot's life.
He was transferred to the notorious Challapalca prison in October 2023, and following his suicide attempt reportedly told authorities it was 'the toughest prison in the world.'
van der Sloot allegedly told authorities he 'didn't want to live anymore.
'Every day I see that the situation is getting worse for us inmates,' van der Sloot said. 'You can't be with your family, you can't touch them or hug them.'
He remains in a stable condition but is still under medical supervision, the publication reported.
He is serving a 28-year sentence for the death of 21-year-old Stephany Flores, who was strangled and beaten in a hotel room in Peru in 2010.

In January 2023, he was handed an additional 18-year sentence on drug smuggling charges, and sentenced to 20 years - to run concurrently on his existing term - for extorting Holloway's mother Beth after her death.
He ultimately confessed to killing Holloway while she was on a high school trip to Aruba in May 2005.
She was 18 when she tragically died.
van der Sloot had told Beth Holloway he would tell her where he hid her daughter's body if she paid him money.
As part of his plea agreement in the extortion and wire fraud cause, he agreed to reveal what happened to Holloway.

Eyewitnesses said she was last seen leaving Carlos'n Charlie's club in a car with van der Sloot and his two friends at 1.30am on May 30, 2005.

Despite being arrested and detained in Aruba for 60 days, he was able to walk free from the island after claiming the teenager was drunk and he had dropped her at her hotel.
Challapalca, where van der Sloot is serving his sentence, is notorious for its tough living conditions for inmates, where they live in harsh, remote and icy cold conditions.
It is known for housing dangerous offenders, including terrorists and murderers.
Earlier this year, there were reports van der Sloot had been included on a list of 'difficult inmates' which could have been headed for El Salvador's notorious CECOT prison, where President Donald Trump has sent the 'worst of the worst' illegal immigrants and gang members who were deported from the United States.
