As most of you know, at last night’s MTV Video Music Award show (which I did not watch), 19-year-old Taylor Swift, a country pop singer-songwriter, won the Best Female Video award. As she started her acceptance speech, rapper Kanye West rushed onstage, ripped the microphone out of her hands and, in effect, told the audience that Taylor did not deserve the award.
Taylor had started out by saying, "I always dreamed about what it would be like to win one of these one day. I never thought it would happen." As she started to continue, West comes up, grabbed the microphone out of her hands, and said, "Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you. I’m gonna let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!"
Taylor did not get to finish her acceptance speed. Backstage, the teenager broke down in tears. However, she got another chance to complete her acceptance speech when Beyonce came on stage to accept the Best Video Award. Beyonce invited Taylor back on stage.
In accepting her award, Beyonce said, "Wow this is amazing. I remember being 17-years-old and up for my first MTV award with Destiny’s Child. It was one of the most exciting moments in my life. So, I’d like for Taylor to come out and have her moment." Taylor then joined Beyonce and finished her acceptance speech, starting out by saying, "Maybe we can try this again."
West is a real jerk! He’s shot his mouth off on several previous occasions, most notably on September 2, 2005 during the NBC-TV broadcast of a benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina victims when he told the audience, "George Bush doesn’t care about black people."
Kanye West has absolutely no class! On the other hand, Beyonce is a real class act!
EDITOR’S NOTE: This evening Kanye West was a guest on Jay Leno’s inaugural prime time NBC TV show. Leno asked West what his late mother would have said to him for what he did at the award ceremony. West could not answer Leno and I watched him shed a tear. When Leno asked him at what point he knew that he had hurt Taylor Swift, West replied "when she didn’t go on [with her acceptance speech]."
