Paco of PacoVilla’s Corrections blog is a wise man indeed. Here is what Paco had to say today about the risk of releasing inmates from prison:
If you want to eliminate risk, you keep people locked up.
If you want to manage risk, you let them out [under close parole supervision].
If you want to ignore risk, contact Dr. Petersilia. [Joan Petersilia, a professor of criminology at Stanford University, who advocates that of all parolees, only 40 percent should get "real parole," while the rest get what she calls "parole-light," a euphemism for no parole supervision.]
