'A LIBERAL APPROACH HERE IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE'

A good law, one that should be adopted by our states! But because chemical castration does not always work to prevent sexual predators from molesting children again, a better preventive punishment would be penile amputation.

Pedophiles are to face castration in Russia, the country's president has said.

Dimitry Medvedev told a meeting of ministers and officials: 'The punishments should be as harsh as possible.

'The state should use all means possible. A liberal approach here is totally unacceptable.

'I suggest discussing these measures, including medical procedures on such persons, such as injections that block hormonal activity.'

Mr Medvedev was said to be referring to chemical castration - which uses injections to wipe the effects of the male hormone testosterone.

The president added that child sex attackers maybe given incentives to voluntarily agree to castration.

The move is backed by state prosecutors and an officially supported campaign group called the Public Chamber, which is dedicated to improving life in Russia.

Anatoly Kucherena, a lawyer who is a member of the group, said: 'We support the idea of chemical castration and legislation has been developed already.

'This procedure should be conducted in the presence of the prosecutor and lawyer for the pedophile.'

Mr Medvedev will have the final say on whether the law - potentially the toughest in Europe - comes into effect.

He has repeatedly stressed the need for tougher penalties for child molesters.
