Michael Sanguinetti, a Toronto Police officer, told a group of university students last January that women could avoid being raped by not dressing like ‘sluts.’
Sanguinetti’s remark set of a shit-storm of protests. They started in Toronto with a ‘Slut Walk’ by a group of women’s rights advocates who were incensed by the officer’s remark and decried blaming the victims for sexual assaults. Slut Walks in other parts of Canada, in England, and in the U.S. were organized through Facebook and Twitter. Organizers say they also want to bring attention to ‘Slut-Shaming,’ the shaming of women for being sexual.
On Saturday, 2,000 protesters showed up for a Slut Walk at the Boston Commons. Some of the women were dressed in lingerie with the word ‘slut’ written across their stomachs.
Slut Walks have also been held in Dallas and Asheville, N.C. and more are planned for Seattle, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Reno and Austin.
Poor old Constable Sanguinetti! He was disciplined and forced to apologize for committing the offense of telling a truth that was not politically correct. He’s lucky he didn’t get fired.
Whenever I am out and about, I see some women wearing micro-miniskirts and tops showing plenty of cleavage, and they’re not streetwalking prostitutes either. When I see news videos of beachfronts, I see women practically naked with their teeny-weeny bikinis. Are these women asking to be raped? Of course not! Are they increasing the chances of getting raped? You bet they are!
Occasionally I go to nightclubs with some cop friends. Many women in those clubs dress in such a way that you can’t tell them apart from street hookers. And while dancing, their provocative gyrations would lead any red-blooded male to believe they are looking to get laid.
Several weeks ago my wife, my son and his family, and I were waiting for a table at a popular restaurant. Also waiting for a table were two women in their 20s, both wearing black dresses so short that when they sat down in the waiting area, my eyes nearly popped out. If they can arouse an old burnout in his mid-80s like me, just imagine what effect their attire could have had on a sexual predator.
Women have every right to be sexual. And men most certainly cannot justify raping a woman because in their minds the victim dressed as if she wanted to get laid. But it is an inconvenient truth that sexual predators can be aroused into committing rape because of the revealing attire worn by their victims.
Would there have been such an uproar had the Toronto officer not used the term ‘slut’ and merely warned his audience that some forms of dress might provoke a sexual predator? That would have made no difference. To some women in the audience he would have been seen as just another sorry-ass man who is quick to blame the victim.
Poor old Constable Sanguinetti almost got fired for giving some helpful advice to a group of university students. The poor bastard was obviously unaware that what he told them was not politically correct. He not only got disciplined, but his helpful advice quickly got lost in the uproar that followed. Sanguinetti was not a male chauvinist cop blaming the victim.
