On February 11, I posted ‘These Marines Performed a Valuable Community Service.’ The story was about some Marines who tried to stop a Best Buy store thief in Augusta, Georgia from getting away. One of the Marines was stabbed by the thief but, fortunately, the stab wound was not serious.
Jeff Doyle, publisher of PACOVILLA Corrections blog, has just received the following e-mail from Camille Serpentine in which she wrote: This story on the website was interesting and I wanted to find out more. But in researching it, I found that it is primarily a made up story.
The story was basically true but, as often happens on the internet, someone added his own take by embellishing the incident as follows:
‘After Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene Cpl. Duggan was transported for treatment. Later the subject was also transported to the local hospital for injuries he sustained........when he slipped and fell off of the curb after stabbing the Marine. The subjects injuries included two broken arms, a broken ankle, a broken leg, several missing teeth, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions, assorted lacerations, a broken nose and a broken jaw...After an extensive hospital stay, the subject is expected to near fully recover in four to six months.’
The part about the thief slipping on the curb and sustaining numerous serious injuries was made up. It’s too damn bad that this part of the story did not actually happen!
