A great way for paramedics to get around the problem of ambulances stuck in traffic. And the Segways can enter a mall to reach an injured or seriously sick shopper where ambulances can’t.

A fleet of Emergency Service Segways will be put into action in Austria after they outperformed ambulances and motorbikes in trials,

The scooters, equipped with sirens and flashing blue lights are perfect for reaching stricken patients struck in traffic jams or busy shopping centres, according to officials,

A Red Cross spokesman in Vienna, Austria, said the gyrobikes are ideal for attending emergencies where crowds are gathered.

He said: 'They go places that conventional vehicles could never reach.'

He added that they had been especially useful in shopping precincts at Xmas and marathons in the Austrian cities of Vienna and Linz where pavements and roads were lined with supporters.

'The Segway could get to people that needed medical help much more effectively than anything else we've seen so far' he said.

'And you can fit them with all the things you would need for most first aid operations including a heart defibrillator.'

Segway's British owner Jimi Heselden, 62, died when his own machine drove off a cliff in a freak accident.

He was found in the River Wharfe at Boston Spa, near Wetherby, West Yorkshire, in September last year.

It was revealed he left his family a fortune of more than £340million.
