SPORTS DIPLOMACY

The Georgetown University basketball team is currently on a 10-day goodwill tour of China in which they are playing several Chinese basketball teams.

On Thursday, in Beijing, the Hoyas played the Bayi Rockets, a team owned by the Chinese army. During the game a bench-clearing brawl broke out. Fists flew and chairs were thrown. The Hoyas stormed off the court without finishing the game.

Obama’s State Department cited the Georgetown University basketball team’s tour as ‘an example of sports diplomacy that strengthens ties between the two countries’ peoples.’
