CREATIVE AND COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION

by Bob Walsh

Every once in a while some government agency in CA is capable of doing something right. The new eastern span of the Bay Bridge has been up and running for some time. Part of the deal with the feds is they had to take out the old piers, all the way down to the mud line. One of the piers, however, is perilously close to Yerba Buena island. So they came up with an effective fiddle.

The other piers were just explosively removed. They can't do it to this one and the cost of conventional removal would be very high indeed. So what they want to do is leave the lower portion of the pier in place, put a fishing pier on it and a walkway 15 feet wide going out the 120 feet to the new set-up, which would be a 6,000 square foot observation pier.

Not every idea coming out of the formerly great state of California is stupid. Just most of them.
