Bob Thiel is a lawyer who used to be on the County Board of Education in San Joaquin County, CA. He wanted to be a superior court judge but unfortunately it was discovered that, while he was on the board of education, he lived illegally outside of the district he represented. He has had to remove himself from the board when his opponent for the judgeship discovered his "honest mistake" and made a political issue out of it. It should be noted he has been on the Board of Education for 16 years, longer than most of the students have been alive.
When Thiel resigned from the board he cited the needs of his campaign for judge as the reason.
He has been living outside of his district for slightly over two years, due to the purchase of a new principle place of residence.
The county figures they are out over $30,000 in pay (meager) and benefits (considerable) that Thiel got while he was legally ineligible to hold his seat.
It is unclear as of now whether Thiel if going to voluntarily reimburse the county or, if he doesn't, if the county will take legal action to recover the funds.
