An Uber driver charged with killing six strangers in southwestern Michigan after claiming the devil was controlling him via the ride-sharing app has pleaded guilty to murder.

Jason Dalton's surprise move occurred on Monday as lawyers and a judge planned to pick a jury in Kalamazoo County court for his trial.

The 48-year-old pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder without any deal.

He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole.

'I've wanted to do this for quite a while,' Dalton told the judge.

He answered 'yes' to a series of questions, admitting that he shot eight people at three locations - an apartment building, a restaurant and a car dealership - in the Kalamazoo area in February 2016.

Four women, a man and a 17-year-old boy were killed.

Two victims, including 15-year-old Abbie Kopf, survived the shootings.

Kopf suffered a fractured skull after being shot in the head and underwent surgery to have a plastic plate inserted. The teenager's recovery was deemed remarkable given doctors were preparing to harvest her organs when she was injured.

Defense attorney Eusebio Solis said he advised Dalton not to plead guilty but he said his client wanted to spare families more grief during a trial.

Police said Dalton had claimed a 'devil figure' on Uber's app was controlling him on the night of the shootings and that it had ordered him to kill.

Court proceedings were initially delayed in the case while Dalton's attorney tried to suppress some statements made to police.

The Michigan appeals court agreed that some could not be used because a detective continued questioning him after Dalton 'invoked both his rights to counsel and to remain silent'.

Dalton was found competent to stand trial, but had made bizarre outbursts at past court appearances.

He was dragged out of a courtroom by deputies during a 2016 court appearance when he started screaming while one of his surviving victims was giving her testimony.

I've used Uber several times. I have the Uber app on my phone so I can see how close an Uber is before I hail one. What I like about them is they will take less cash than the fare under the table and never claim the pick up. This has happened more than once. Their cars are usually nicer than a cab and they haven't tried to long haul me.

According to this story, he's nuts so they will send him to the penitentiary where all mental cases go.
