Yes, they announced it early Tuesday morning. Sears and K-Mart are going the way of the Studebaker, DoDo bird and integrity of elected officials.
It will leave a fair amount of interesting real estate around. Too bad I don't have a deep pocket. There is a nice large stand-alone K-mart near my house that would make a marvelous indoor shooting range, or go-kart track, or indoor flea market, or one hell of a thrift store.
Little known fact. Richard Nixon was born in a Sears mail-order house. At one time you could get pretty much anything from a spool of thread to a complete kit to build a house from. I for one will miss them. Retail is changing. You change or you die.

I remember our family doing the bulk of our school clothes shopping at Sears. Those new blue jeans were tough! Most of our appliances came from Sears because of their good warranty. Our big box Sears store has been closed for a couple of years, but the stand alone appliance stores are still up and running as of yesterday.
As kids we called the Sears catalog the Wish Book.
Our stand alone appliance store also remains up and running. Employees told me that they are owned by an affiliate of Sears and will remain open as usual. I hope they do, as they stock quality products and provide really good service. We bought our new dryer from them just last month. Another washing machine is next, and we'll buy that from them as well if they remain open.
As it turns out the news report was wrong, at least maybe. At the last minute Eddie Lampert put together an offer which the board is at least looking at. If approved it will save about 425 stores and 50,000 jobs. We will know on January 14 if the bankruptcy judge is buying it or not.
