“Poles cooperated with the Nazis. I know the history, and I don't whitewash it. I bring it up,” Netanyahu said in Warsaw
On Thursday, while attending a conference in Warsaw on Middle East security, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “Poles cooperated with the Nazis. I know the history, and I don't whitewash it. I bring it up.”
To say that his statement pissed off the Polish government is an understatement. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki threatened to cancel the Visegrád conference, to be held next week in Beersheba and attended by the prime ministers of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Morawiecki said: “If the comments attributed to Netanyahu are correct., Israel is not a good place to hold the conference.” Apparently, he and Netanyahu straightened their differences out because Morawiecki later said, “We have received clarifications from Israel and the crisis is over.”
Poland has a law that makes it illegal to blame the Polish nation for Holocaust crimes. Israel sees that law as an attempt by Poland to suppress discussion of the killing of Jews by Poles during the WW2 Nazi occupation.
Netanyahu may have pissed off the Poles, but his statement was spot on. Poland has a long history of virulent anti-Semitism and pogroms against the Jews. During the Nazi occupation, many Poles eagerly helped the SS round up Jews for deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau and other Nazi death camps in Poland. And today, Poland is still rife with anti-Semitism.
I don’t know what clarification the Polish government received, but as far as I’m concerned … fuck Poland!
