KILLED BY PET BIRD

OK, It Was A Real Large Pet Bird

by Bob Walsh

A man living near Alachua, Florida was killed Friday by his pet cassowary. This is a large bird, very similar to an emu, which has the reputation of being very dangerous to humans. They have claws up to 4" long and can cut a potential predator open with one very fast kick. They can also run 30 mph.

A permit is needed to own one in Florida. The Fish and Wildlife Commission has not yet said if the dead guy had a permit or not. He was breeding the birds. Florida lists them as Class II Wildlife, potentially threatening to human beings. I guess they are right.

It turns out that the bird was the top of the food chain and he wasn't.
